It's been awhile since I've been to the forum so here's the backstory.
Last summer the motor was running fine. Then it developed a habit of not powering up to 100% until after an extended warm up, then would run fine the rest of the day. Finally, the extended warmup quit working and now it won't go to full power. It starts relatively easy, won't rev past 3000 or so(not enough to plane), and it will flood out and die if I keep the pushed to 100% too long. It will run all day at idle.
After much research and conversation on this forum, I decided that it must be the switchbox or an ignition coil. So I proceeded to do a diagnostic test that was given by a member here.
1. Check spark all cylinders - Mine didn't spark on 3, at least we didn't think so
the spark on the spark tester was hard to see.
2. changed the ignition coil from cylinder without spark to one with spark
3 Retest spark all cylinders. Supposedly, if the no spark cylinder changed it meant the ignition coil was bad, if not, the switchbox.
Here's my issue. After changing the coil to a sparking cylinder, all cylinders sparked. All sparks are hard to see. It's possible that I missed a spark on the first test. It's possible that the problem doesn't lie in the ignition system.
mariner 90 3cyl oil injected is the motor I'm discussing
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
