Bought a used 50 hp Mariner. The serial number tag has been obliterated-not readable. How can I determine what the year and serial number are.
I was told when buying it was a 1995 but I had to buy a solenoid and the picture identification for the solenoid said 2001 and up. Any help would be appreciated. A web site or other way to identify the correct year and serial number would be helpful.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,.... While I don't have a straight up answer for you,...

I've gone through various parts look up sites,+ compared what I saw with what I had to determine pretty much exactly what I needed....

Ya gotta love the Pictures....

I surely dont have the know how of most in here but I had the same problem. I have a 40 mariner and found the serial number on a quarter size plug on the starboard side of the engine. Its just the number and not the model..but from there i was able to figure out the rest. I hope that helps ya

I have looked the engine over closely. There is a number inscribed using an electric scriber on the block area. Other than that I have not been able to see any other number but I will look again.

Thanks for the tip though.

Re: Mariner Serial Number

I re-examined the area deep bewhind the carbuetor and a hose and there was indeed a spot that had a number cast into it. That number is this--892324955C2.

This doesn't appear to be a serial number to me. Any body have any thoughts or clarification?

According to the service manual, motors built after 92 (production year 93) should have the serial number stamped on top of the block somewhere. That's hit and miss from what I've seen.

However, there is always a block casting date stamp on the block and it should be on the bottom of the block towards the top cylinder right where the block and case cover join. You may have to scratch some paint off to read it. Usually the casting date is the year prior to production but not always.

Once you've ball parked the production year you can go over to www.crowleymarine.com and use their parts catalog to match up part numbers with what you have on your engine.
