Hi Guys, I have recently acquired a Mercury Mariner 90hp oil injected 6 cylinder that I need to order parts for. I have never owned a Mariner, so I would like some advice from someone that is familiar with them. I looked for a serial number plate on or near the tilt/trim system and couldn't find a plate per say. This is what I have found on the motor so far: raised letters on the cylinder block say 8527738. I don't think this is the serial number because I have seen where other people have searched the same number before on the web, 1499-8709-C2 on the inside of the tilt/trim system facing transom on part that raises up with motor and I think that may be a part number, and on what looks like a freeze plug on right side of motor near the rear in the block is the stamped number B196998, which is the closest thing so far to a serial number. Is that right? I need to know about what year it is to get the correct parts. Also is there any way to get any better clue on the lower unit as that is where the water pump is? Would it be better to go ahead and remove impeller and measure it to get the correct one? Thanks, Headpainter

Re: .Mariner serial number help please.

Gerry, I appreciate the reply but I am a bit confused. The model I think I have is a 90 hp 6 cylinder. You say I have a 115? Also the serial number you came back with, 167871, didn't match the medallion on the block B196998. I believe it is a 1987 model if that chart you supplied is correct, but a 90hp. Am I wrong?

B167871 is the starting s/n number for that year and as the next year starting s/n is higher than B196998, yours is a 1987.

I corrected the parts list in my previous post as I had a number wrong.

Can you tell me the p/n of the carbs you have on your engine?

Re: .Mariner serial number help please.

Ok. I will look today for the carb numbers. I did some research on the years and parts breakdowns and the 1987 motors were 3 cyl, not 6 cylinder inline like mine. My cowlings didn't match etc. so I looked thru the year mods to find when they made the inline 6 cyl with cowlings that matched mine and lower units that looked the same. The inline 6 cyl 90hp was made 1979-80 and again 1984-1986. But the front center of the cowling looked like mine on the 1979-80 models, which is more rectangular than the later design like a flared wing bird type. Thanks again for your help. Headpainter

Ok. Here are the carb numbers as stamped into the front of the bowls in a vertical pattern: Top carb 41-1B-0137 Middle carb 41-2B-0427 Bottom carb 41-3B-XXXX. I could not see the bottom 4 digits on the bottom carb. I need a small mirror. Is that sufficient for what you need? Thanks, Headpainter

Re: .Mariner serial number help please.

Gerry, thanks for the reply. I wouldn't have thought to look up the carb numbers. So it appears to be a 1987 115 hp with a 90hp cowling on it. This is according to the serial number disk on motor and carb cross reference. So either the powerhead was changed out to a 115 or someone put a 90 hp shroud on it. I believe that the 90/115 shared alot of the same parts especially from below the powerhead into the lower unit if I'm not mistaken. I'm going to look up parts later for the 115 1987 model to see if the rest of the motor looks like mine. Thanks, Headpainter
