mariner problem

I just bought a boat that was a 1984 Mariner 150. The motor turns over great, but it seems like it is having a problem getting gas. The other day I was able to get it to start for a minute not then it died. The thing is it started really easy at first, but after it died I couldn’t get it started again. I thought maybe I had flooded it. I cleaned the fuel filter in the motor. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? Also I’m using a 50:1 ratio. I’m pretty sure this is correct.

Re: mariner problem

Can you get the S#'s for us? What type of fuel filter do you have? I am assuming a changeble cartrige type.? Clear with a cartrige? If so change it dont try to clean it. Second off pull out your plugs. Are they wet? Are they dry and black? This can help everyone tell if it is a rich or lean problem. How long since a fuel pump rebuild? Are your gas tank vents plugged? Check those. Remove and clean your carbs. Make sure you totally break them down. When you re- assemble them check to make sure when held right side up the bowl floats are level with the carb. This controls fuel flow. Make sure your fuel bulb is staying hard? They can suck shut or if the line is bad they can bleed off. These are your cheepest routes but start easy and go up. Plugged up or out of adjustment carbs sound like the best place to start. Good luck and keep posted with what you have done. I forgot! If you have carbs with needle seats start about 1.5 turns out from seated and adjust from there. Closed down is richer, out is leaner. Just don't over lean it!
