Hello there,i have a 91 135hp mariner,i took the poppet valve out today to check it and theres a stainless steel washer in there underneath the diaphragm. Can someone tell me if the washer should be there or has it been stuffed in there for a quick fix.The way it is now it looks like the washer wouldnt let it close up properly.cheers and tight lines.

Re: mariner poppet valve

If your poppet valve cover plate is the style that has a two faces, (one large face with a smaller one attached), that piece you are refering to could be the water deflector... I'm not sure it is supposed to be stainless steel or plastic. But it shows up on the schematics just under the diaphram... It's just slightly smaller in diameter that the diaphram and fits between it and the divider plate....

However it shouldn't affect the performance of the poppet to open...

thanks kclost, but the way i see it the washer under the diaphram like that wont let the diaphram seal against the inside plate.when i blow through the hose i can blow straight through because of the gap.is there somewhere i can see a schematic of it to make sure im on the same track as you.cheers

Re: mariner poppet valve

Hose???? Is there a hose going into the smaller plate on the cover?

If so, you have an after market item (I believe). But the pressure that opens the valve, will not come from any hose, it will come from the water pressure within the block. That will push the poppet valve out of the block and press the diaphram outward...

PS... If that hose goes from the poppet cover (the small part) to the top of the block, that is meant to relieve excess pressure (not water but air pockets). I don't have the exact poppet valve you have by the sounds of it, but I think that yours is designed to push the diapram outward, and in higher pressure instances excess water travels to the other side of the cover plate and exits the hose...

By the way, are you having any overheat problems??? Give me your serial number and I'll try to find your exact schematic...

Re: mariner poppet valve

i wanded to check the valve bacause i thought the motor was running a bit hot for my liking.i havent checked it with a thermometer yet but its pretty warm when i put my hand under the tell tail,it doesnt burn but its not far of it.im told they do run very warm is that right?.my serial number is oc211586.looks like the washer is there so the diaphram doesnt close right up.i might be worrying about nothing but it scares be to thing its running so hot.thanks kclost
ps my mistake by blowing down the exit hose wont tell me if its working propley.

Here is the link to the schematic for your engine... It also shows the hose and fittings that is considered a new design... Look at part# 16, that should be the washer you are talking about..
And yes, these motors do like to run hot. If you're not getting an alarm, you're probably ok..

Schematic
