mariner outboard shifting problems

I have a 25 hp mariner outboard serial # og202663 that wont shift into reverse. The tiller came apart last spring and I han it rebuilt last year. When I got it back everything seemed fine until after duck season then I couldnt get it to go into reverse.forward and netural seem fine how can I check adjustments also what year is the motor? any help would be appreaciated thanks.

Put it in take the coweling off an watch the shift machanism on the side of the powerhead when you put it in reverse, there should be a adjustment on the cable that pushes the cam in the reverse position. Adjust it there and see if you get reverse. If you do it without the engine running, and you check the prop, it should'nt spin in either direction with reverse engaged. If you get that it's pretty much good to go, you HAVE to water test it to be 100% sure though. Reverse may seem like its working without running, but put a load on it and see for sure.
