Mariner Oil pump failures

I have a 1997 Mariner 150 XRi engine that seems to have a problem with oil pumps. The first oil pump failed a couple of years ago, costing $1500 in engine rework. This past weekend, I had my second oil pump fail in less than 50 hrs of use (teeth on the gear were broken). The verdict is still not in if there is any engine damage this time or not. My mechanic does not have any idea why the engine eats oil pumps. Does anybody have any ideas of what to look for? If the mechanic can't tell me something I'm looking having to replace this engine with one that is more reliable. Is this a typical problem for the Mercury Mariners?

tdevince, the only time i have seen an oil injection failure cost $1500 to repair is when the operater didnt heed the warning horn.....oil injection gears on these motors fail from these things:<br />engine over heat causing plastic gear distortion<br />oil seal backing out of pump and binding oil pump drive<br />oil injection check valve that is stuck and over pressurizing oil pump...this check valve is on the outlet side of pump and should pass oil at 2 PSI..have seen some would not pass at 10PSI<br />poor installation of oil gear/ or rough handling of driven gear at install<br />finally, the #1 reason, the 1 all the racers take oil inj. off their motors for....over revving the engine...the high side of 6 grand will take these gears, its just a matter of time<br />you can say merc oil injection is junk,heck allotta people do, but think about all the motors built with it since 1984, its been ALOT...an the vast majority never had a lick of trouble....
