Re: mariner gear box
Hi, just going down the list looking at the 0 replies only, I hate when no one looks at mine. Here goes.. Check and make sure shift linkage is correctly adjusted and that you are truely going into gear fully and not just half way. Grinding goin in reverse? Every engine has an appropriate RPM at forward gear idle, make sure you are within that range, Idling too high can make it difficult to shift. Should idle as low as possible, yet still idle and not die in forward gear (no extra throttle). If none of this works for you, drain oil from lower and look for water, metal chips etc and note condition of oil. If gears are worn they will be in chips in your gear box. Some shavings are normal wear, wish I could tell you what too many looks like. You find alot of metal you probably need a rebuild. Hope this helps some.
