hey guys have a 1984 mariner 115 hp and the motor dies out at high speed changed switch boxes cuz a repair shop said they was bad but that didnt solve problem so was checkin the fuel pump and i have 3 lbs pressure at idle but checked the flow and idiling for 30 seconds it puts out 8 fl oz of gas so do u guys think the fuel pump is ok what pressure should it have i guess it should be more than 3 lbs but it seems to have good flow so does pressure mean that much thanks for your time guys

Pressure needs to be somewhere between 1 1/2 lbs and about 7 at all times. Fuel pump is only part of it. Pickup tube in the tank, hose from there to engine, primer bulb, engine connector all play a part.

Best bet is to rig a fuel gauge that you can see when you're running WOT, and look at it then. If when it's acting up, fuel pressure dives, you have a fuel problem. If not, then it's something electrical.

hope it helps

Re: mariner fuel pump question

ok thanks will do

You might be surprised. When I bought my XR4, I got 500 bucks off because it balked at WOT. With the pressure gauge rigged up, I found.
Plugged fuel filter.
pinholes in suction line
fuel pump, obsolete check (disc) valves
plugged pickup screen, snot in the tank
plugged fuel filter
Insufficient primer bulb line (Atwood)
Insufficient bayonet fittings (Atwood again)

Each fault was found and repair verified with the pressure gauge.

Now it runs like a scalded dog.

Re: mariner fuel pump question

well had boat on water yesterday and fuel pressure was between 3 to 6 lbs also have clear inline filter and it had a good stream of fuel going thru the filter so at this point im thinkin electrical problem i have changed switch boxes but checked no.1 cylinder and it only sparks once in a while and all other cylinders are intermittent so im thinkin stator at this point what u guys think ......... i still have same issue doesnt want to take off then when it does runs up to 5000 then dies back to 4000

Re: mariner fuel pump question

At this point you need to test the ignition system with a DVA. By testing the stator outputs, trigger outputs, and switchbox outputs, you can determine exactly which part is failing.

Systematic diagnostics is the fastest and least expensive route to a repair.

Remember, you started this conversation asking about the fuel pump, which has now been eliminated as a problem, at least if you did as I said and are not just restating your idle fuel pressure.

hope it helps

Re: mariner fuel pump question

yea the pressure for the fuel is 3 to 6 lbs runnin at different rpms and at wot the motor runs good at times when we first put it on the water it never missed a beat until we ran it for 20 mins then it didnt want to take off from idle then when i would get it going at wot it would die back to 4000 i put a trigger on it from another motor i had and it acts the same with this trigger as it did wit the old one i also replaced both switch boxes with ones from mallory idont have a way to check dva voltage but the dva adapater is 60 bucks and i can get a cdi stator for 145 so i cant see spending 60 bucks just to find out i need to spend another 145 any how to get the stator ......but my thoughts are the stator gets hot then something doesnt jive with it is this common.....although i did have voltages checked by a mechanic that told me the swiych boxes were bad changing the boxes helped but did not solve prob but he only checked voltages with it crankin did not start motor and my problem dont start until wot or sometimes it doesnt want to take off above idle so what he did is useless

Believe it or not, DVA readings at cranking are valid. For instance, if a high speed stator winding is bad, the voltage reading will be wrong when cranking, but it won't show symptoms until rpms are high.

You can make a DVA adapter for a few dollars if poverty is the main factor.

With fuel pressure normal, and low speed operation normal, it appears you are dropping 1 or 2 cylinders at WOT. The question is..... Which cylinders and why, ie which part is bad?

If you could find out which cylinders are mis-firing, it would help a lot. triggers lose em 2 at a time, stators 3 at a time. Switchboxes can do whatever they durned well please. Then can drop 1,2,or 3, or hold them all and screw up the other switchbox through the bias circuit. Fun, huh.

hope it helps

On my 1985 50 hp mariner, it runs great as long as the primer bulb is pumped up, but after running a few minuets it bogs down untill you pump the bulb back up ?

Either you have air leak in fuel line somewhere between the primer bulb and the carb.
Or the fuel pump needs to be rebuilt.

Replace and/or tighten all fuel lines.

Rebuild fuel pump, the kit is about $18.
