Hey guys back again! I got this 15hp Mariner from my co worker and he said “it works good!” And this is my first time taking it out and as you can see in the video this thing does not go into forward or reverse. With the motor off when I put it in forward and reverse the propeller still freely spins. When I try to put it into gear it revs up and the prop moves extremely slowly and doesn’t move the boat. Same with reverse. It seems to run decent and pisses water. He claims he’s had it for the past 2 years and that it’s worked perfectly but I find that hard to believe. He thinks maybe the “internal gears got messed up cuz it was laying on its side in the truck when taking it home” I think that’s a load of BS. I’m coming on here with this cuz I can’t think of what is possibly wrong with it.

Sorry to hear but the guy ripped you off. It's not going to be damaged laying on it's side. Drop the lower and have a look, also check the gear lube

Maybe only recourse is small claims court

I would start by pulling the lower drive. See if you can shift it on the lower unit into forward and reverse and see if the prop still spins freely....
Can hope that the shifter didn't get aligned properly if it was recently taken apart for an impeller or something...otherwise the gears may be the issue. Check the gear oil and see if it has metal flakes in it. That may also give you your answer.

Drop the lower unit and see if the drive shaft is broken. Extremely common on those.

Agreed----Driveshaft may be broken-----Get your money back !!
A new driveshaft doesn’t sound cheap lol. I work everyday with the guy who sold it to me. I constantly give him **** and he seems to feel bad he offered me 100 bucks and to help me fix it.

Model / serial # of your motor ?----Driveshaft may not be available unless you find one used on " fleabay " -----and it might require lower unit teardown to replace it.----Get your money back.

We need to know which lower unit you have. A design 1 or design 2. Design 1 has a bushing in it that will need to be replaced. That drive shaft is north of 250. Easy to find out take the lower off remove the water pump and pull up on the drives shaft. If it comes out freely it is broken. You can then see if the top is a bushing or a bearing. That will tell you which one it has.

Yes some of the older, really old models had a shear pin.-----Not the one in the picture I think.

It’s hard to see in the pic but it says S030563. I tried finding the year but i couldn’t find an exact match. And I also just noticed this by the propeller. Looks like it got tightened too much and broke whatever that is.

I thought that was an American made Mariner. My fault but that motor is worse. The Yamaha made Mariner has next to 0 parts support for that motor get your money back. Don't even bother taking it apart get your money back. Hopefully you did not pay a lot for it.

That lower unit had water in it and it froze.----Or the gears crunched up and jammed up the works .----Sheared the driveshaft.----I would declare this as a " parts motor "--And scrap value.-----See post #7
