I'm new to boating but I recently purchased a 14' Jon Boat w/ a Mariner engine. The engine appears to run fine but I see other outboard engines with a very visible stream of water discharging from the engine which I assume indicates that the water pump is working fine and not clogged. I don't see this on my engine. Is there supposed to a similar stream or does the water flow exit in a different fashion? I am afraid to take anything but a "test drive" until I get an answere. I plan to take it to the shop next weekend but if this is normal for this type of Mariner engine it will save me some money.

Re: Mariner 9.9HP 628-C Water Pump

Hi,
What Year is our outboard made?

If it is unknown when Your outboard was last serviced I suggest You have it serviced including a new impeller installed so You know the impeller will work some seasons without trouble for You. Does not cost much to have a new impeller installed.
It is not unusual for the tell tale house to get clogged with mud or similar so try to clean the inside of the house and see if it helps (I had it clogged with mud once on a Suzuki DT65 I had before).

Also try the forum:
Mercury Outboard & Mariner Outboard Troubles/Repair
since this is a Mariner "Trouble"
