I shall be grateful for advice on dismantling (and rebuilding of course!) Mariner 9.9 2 stroke for replacing the cooling impeller. From the serial number - 09583859 believed to be 1998 model. I am not sure of impeller location and where to start! I hope it's the impeller at fault and not thermostat wherever that might be.
The flow of cooling water became pretty much non existent and steam only followed soon after. As an auxiliary engine it has had very little use but started and run frequently for very short periods just to ensure it will start if needed. Has also been started through each winter every couple of months running on stand and water butt.
Many thanks.

Re: Mariner 9.9

Mine is a 30 HP, so different than yours - so I can't offer any specific advice, only words of encouragement. When I first started on this forum I thought replacing the impeller was equivalent to a major overhaul. Thanks to input here and my service manual I discovered it is a simple task. I also found out that pulling and checking/replacing the thermostat is even simpler.

Re: Mariner 9.9

Many thanks to all. Looks like I should buy a service manual and will follow up on that. I was hoping to get away without that. In the meantime I can see from the parts schedules where the pump is. I'm not tight - just on a budget! Talking about tight - the plastic gearshift handle - obviously with centre screw removed it still will not budge of it's shaft. Would not wish to risk levering it off against the housing because that is plastic too. Any harm in boiling water in the hopes of freeing it up? I can see it has to come off to release the gearshift shaft. All just thoughts today because of work on other things.
Best regards B
