Mariner 9.9 fuse blowing

Hi all from across the pond.
Can anyone give me an idea as to why my 20amp fuse is blowing. If I spin the engine for more than 4/5 seconds and it has not started, the fuse blows! I know its naughty BUT if I spray easystart into the air intake, it then fires straight away and no problems. I have heard that engines can become addicted to easystart, not sure if this can be true but do not wish to risk it. The boat gets wet for the first time tomorrow on the river Thames in my ownership, hope it a) floats and b) engine starts!
As usual, any help much appreciated:)

Are you saying that the fuse doesn't blow when you use starting fluid?

Outboard motors aren't subject to addiction.

BTW, if this is a 2-stroke, you MUST use starting fluid with oil in it or you risk damaging the motor.

Hi, its a 4 stroke and the fuse does not blow if the engine starts quickly, if I have to spin it for more than 4 or 5 seconds, the fuse blows. Using easystart, it starts straight away and no problems. ARGH!

Can you post some engine information? Serial number, model number, year, 4 or 2 stroke, etc. Is this fuse on the motor?

Hi again, its a 1997 Mariner 9.9 EL. Engine number OHO 11825 4 stroke. I think I have mentioned on another thread, when I checked the engine over after purchase, the "20" amp fuse from the solonoid was in fact a piece of tin so it has been a problem for a while. I took on the water today for the first time, used easystart, fired up and ran fine. Switched off at the locks and restarted without the need for easystart. I like a challenge!

I would start out by testing the solenoid, the field and the starter contacts.

I happen to also have that motor in the 1996 version and according to the electrical drawing the only thing in that circuit is the solenoid field coil so I would say it is bad, its shorting out internally. I didnt see what the ohm value should be for the coil.

Re: Mariner 9.9 fuse blowing

Thank you for that, I have just replaced the solenoid with S/H one as it went U/S but the fuse was blowing before the change. Went down to the boat this morning, gave it a few spins but would not fire, used Easystart, fired first time and no more problems. Looks like I might buy a few cans and resign myself to it for this season, its not that difficult provided I do not need to do it each time I stop the engine which at the moment, I do not. Happy Easter!

Remove the brown wire from the small terminal on the starter solenoid. Then with a jumper wire jump the solenoid and crank the engine and see if it still blows the fuse. If it does, I would be looking into the regulator/rectifier and other things in the system.
Do you have the push button start on the engine, or do you have a remote control?

Hi again, It has a key switch on the remote which you push in to operate the choke.
I am afraid we are expecting SNOW here, I will not get on the boat for a short while, will try it when next on her.
I have also ordered a Circuit Breaker to replace the fuse as I am running out of them!

Assuming the ignition switch is in the control box, it's quite possible you have a chafed wire in the wiring either in the control box, or in the wiring harness between the motor and control.
I would sure go buy some fuses instead of a circuit breaker. Then if the fuse blows, disconnect the ten pin harness from the engine and try jumping the solenoid again. If it still blows, the problem is on the engine side.
