I have a 1996 Mariner 9.9 hp 2 stroke and after running for several months would not start. I rebuilt the carburetor with a new kit with gaskets, etc. I replaced the fuel tank and fuel line. It still wouldn't start. I then took the needle valve out and inspected it and it looked clean. I reset the float. I looked at the fuel jet and it looked clean with the plug that looked worn but still worked. I then tried to start it and it started fine with the primer pulled out all the way. It will run for several minutes until I either push the primer in with the fast setting or it will die on its own.
I've gone through the adjustment steps as specified in the online manual: the idle speed screw set to just backed off and half a turn; the low speed mixture screw turned in and then backed out 1 1/2 turns; the idle wire adjust to trigger to remove all clearance between the two. This last adjustment doesn't make much sense since I don't see clearance between the wire and trigger unless the clearance is in the adjustment screw. Anyway after doing these adjustments I cannot do the low speed idle adjustment because it will stall before I can adjust the low speed mixture screw.
I think it is because the mixture is too lean since it will only run with the primer pulled out but I have played around with the above adjustments to no avail. Let me know where to go from here. Could it be something besides the carburetor? It idles fine when I first start it. Thanks.
