Mariner 80hp electronics hassles

My approx 1980 model Mariner 80hp has burned 3 trigger coils in two weeks. Each one lasting a couple of seconds and resulting in no spark to cylinders 3 and 4. I have replaced the rectfier/regulator which was burned and identified a short circuit which I thought was the cause of the coil burns but with no luck. What is causing the coils to burn?

perhaps the battery connection is so poor or<br />running without a battery at all? I would also<br />suspect a bare/burnt wire you may have overlooked.<br />good luck,<br />M.Y.

Thanks M.Y. With frequent battery exchanges between my car and boat I have not always been tightening the battery terminals with the screws being corroded as well.
