I recently bought a 1998 ish mariner 6HP. Its on the back of a 240 quicksilver airdeck. It starts no problem first pull with the choke and idles no bother. At lower revs it will plough along nicely but when I open up the throttle to near full revs it starts to die. I was able to plane for about 10 seconds, Ive heard the petrol may not being getting through, or dirty carbs but admitedly i dont know much about outboards, any help would be appreciated.

Hi

Does the primer bulb stay firm or does it go soft...if it loses pressure it would indicate a fuel pump problem

Yeah I second that. Try and pump the fuel bulb as the motor is hitting higher rpms. If it runs better while priming the bulb then you more than likely have a fuel pump issue. Other chance is a clogged high speed jet. Or you could eliminate the guess work and get a fuel pump and carb rebuild kit.

It seems to be pretty solid yeah, and ive tried to continually pump it while im trying to hit the higher revs but it still dies out. I had it running wide open throttle for about 10 seconds but it then died and the engine would cut out unless i reduced the amount of throttle i was giving it. Also if it died I would have to start it again using the choke.

Yeah well then no doubt in my mind, you have an obstruction in your high speed jet. Pull the carb, break it down, soak it, and order a new carb kit. Should be around $20. While you are at it you can add an extra $10-$15 and get a fuel pump rebuild kit also.
