have a 1992 mariner outboard that cranks and runs fine, but while idling it will occassionally "miss" and the idle will momentarily drop. it did this last season some, not sure if it did it the whole season. i have changed plugs and it made no difference. when it does the skip, it usually does not cut off, but a puff of oil looking smoke usually comes out. one other question, this weekend while getting it out to start the season, the muffs fell off and i ran the engine for maybe 30 seconds or so without water. engine was cold and after i reinstalled them water still seemed to come out the "pee hole" like it normally does. should i worry about the water pump wheel? thanks!

Yes I would be concerned about your impeller,as the ones in the 60hp triples are really marginal to begin with. I should know,as I neglected my impeller in my 650 merc and I lost the #1 cylinder. 30 seconds spinning without water would be cause for me to drop the lower unit and inspect. As far as the miss at idle, would you characterize it as a sneeze? If so you are probably running lean.

not really a sneeze......more like it just floods a cylinder for a second, then it picks back up. don't notice this at anywhere but idle. is it possible the oil ratio is set too high? i do notice when it does this it usually gives out a puff of smoke.
