Hello,

Im new to the forums, but I have been lurking for a few years.
I made the leap to "bigger boys toys" and got myself a nice mariner. 60 Hp.
Serial numer : 675 S 00439
The engine itself looks to be in nice shape.
155 PSI on both cylinders, starts and runs well. Havent seen it in "action" yet.
Now I plan to use this engine ofcourse. But the wiring for the starter is a mess (AKA The starter switch wiring to the internals of the engine) and the dead-mans switch seems to be inoperative.
I also want to overhaul the carburators but I do need a parts list for that.

I know absolutely nothing about this particulair engine. Hell, I dont even know what the mix ratio is!
Any and all information is welcome. Also a correction on year is appreciated if I may be wrong.

I live in Holland, so parts is a bit more difficult.

I also would like to hook up an RPM meter of sorts. Is that even possible with this engine?

A cheap affordable downloadable service manual is also appreciated.

I Aprecciate any help on this subject. I do apologize if I post anything that has been posted or asked before.

Regards
Reinoud

Well Reinoud, welcome aboard :welcome: Good to have you join us...

dalverian, seems you have a good start with your engine. My very first suggestion is to research and buy the manufacture's shop manual. Not some after market version that tries to cover every engine known to man, but the actual factory shop manual that Mariner uses in their shops specifically for your model engine. It is by far the absolute best engine manual you will even want , need or use...period! So many questions you may have will be explained in such a manual. Secondly post some pictures of your engine and specially the areas you have questions about. We love pictures and so many time pictures convey things better then explanations... Again welcome aboard!

Hi.

Thank you for the quick responce.
Where would I get the original manufacture`s shop manual? Digital downloads are fine!

Here are some pictures I made just now.
Should I worry about the puddle? It seems to be fuel/water/oil mix, but could be casiing oil? Hope not!

regards
Me

Seems I was wrong in the date.
ITs a 1977/78.

IS the engine 1-1 the same as a 55 yamaha? If so, that would make my search for tach, ignition and other bits a bit easyer

regards

Hope some of the outboard experts look in, but I'm pretty sure the Mariner is not the same as the Yamaha, it would be more like the Mercury. Look in the boatinfo link above to find your motor and serial number. So far as a tach, all the tach's hook up about the same way, so I don't see much of an issue finding one

I figured that out about tachs.
As for the mariner - Yamaha, Mariner used to be Yamaha, before they went to Mercury. Thats also what makes it difficult to find parts, as now, I automaticly go to mercury parts if I look for mariner specificly. But if memory serves me right, Mercury got hold of Mariner somewhere around the 80`s.

Yamaha 55 looks exactly the same, down to the wire as far as I can tell. Hence why I ask the question, just to be sure.
Will be calling my local Mercuiry dealer tomorrow to see if they sell parts for my engine, or if I have to go to Yamaha instead.

Mariner was originally Yams for the engines below 70hp, and Merc above... Roughly 1982 Merc bought Mariner, and started to phase across all engines to Mercs. That was achieved by around 1986.

So, the answer to 'is a 60 Mariner the same as a Yam 55 of the same year?', is No.... Those 2 are different, but the Yam 60 and the Mariner 60 ARE the same... Unfortunately I have only seen Yam parts listings that go back to 1984, so anything earlier is just a guess.

Fuel/oil ratio? 50:1....

Where in Holland? I'm currently working (when I get back there :noidea:) in Schiedam...(next to Rotterdam)...

Chris.....

as for the 55 yamaha., Thank you for the information. I am in trouble when it gets to parts then =)

so, been around the block and back again.

Seems parts is a huge issue. So I hope my little alien keeps on running.

As for the manuals, none of them seems to be for my engine. The closest I could find was a manual to 3 cylinder engines. As mine is a 2 cylinder Im pretty sure it doesnt apply to mine.

I am yet to find a full wiring diagram for the external controls. (it seems the opriginal wiring loom is missing and they replaced it this way.)
I want to revert back to simplicity.

Anyone having any more information on this engine, please do share.

And as for the black puddle below the gear casing...should I worry?

Sticky black could be unburnt engine oil (from the fuel) that is a low quality. Quite common. Just check your gearbox oil to be sure it's not that.

(Just got home (Australia) from Mosocw, so still looking up the info on your engine...)

Hot shipping to Europe/Holland/Netherlands :grumpy:

Thank you anyways. It is indeed what I think I may be possibly looking for.

At least you now have the part number and know what to look for. Do you have a friend in the US who would be happy to receive and re-ship for you? Maybe one of our members might be interesting in helping.... (As a couple of them go for me. :D)
