mariner 6 cylinder 90 hp, should I part it out or fix it?

Hey, I'm new to iboats but have heard a lot of good things about this site. I own an older Starcraft aluminum and can't wait to bring it back to its glory days, with the advice of other iboat members, but I will save that for the Starcraft forums.

The question I have today is about my Mariner 90hp. I believe it is a 1985, it was winterized and parked outside about 5 years ago, some time was spent inside... I live in Ontario so there was blowing snow. The power trim, bottom end, and everything is good (ran great the last time it was used) but the powerhead is seized. I was thinking of soaking it with oil but have heard that the rings will still be stuck to the pistons and the bearings may be siezed as well.

I am wondering if I should try to get it going or sell it off. I think I'll be into a lot more than I can chew if I try to fix it (I've also got a 70hp Evinrude with power trim I could just replace it with) but don't know what its worth to sell.

Looking for some info of how much I should post it for, or some info on how much money I would be into if I tried to fix it.

I tried to include a pic of the motor, the serial number points to it being a 1985 but the motor doesnt say "oil injected" on the side, I thought most motors were oil injected by 1985

Thanks

OK, emove the wrap cowl and tilt her up. Now dump some penetrating oil into the cylinders and let her sit a while. Maybe it will loosen up. Usually it is the rings that corrode a bit to the cylinder walls. If it loosens, you can oil her up with some 2 cycle oil and spin it a bit to reseat the rings. Then take a compression test and post results.

If it doesn't loosen up, you can take a brass drift pin and place it thru the spark plug hole and give each piston a "firm rap" to help it free up.

There is no reason to sell it off. The way the engine is tilted it is unlikely that snow has drifted in. We have the same snow here down in Lake Erie ontario and our snow is specifically prohibited from entering engines:facepalm:. Seriously, bring the engine inside, spray liberal amounts of penetrating oil into the spark plug holes and let it soak. Keep trying to move the flywheel each day and spray more penetrating oil in. It will free up.

I tilted it up about a week ago and filled the cylinders with liquid wrench and engine storage spray. I then filled them up the rest of the way with 10w30. I let it sit for 2 days then tried an impact on the flywheel bolt as well as trying to tap the flywheel but still it never moved. It has been sitting for about a week now and am going to try it again this coming weekend. Some of the cylinders wouldn't fill up, I assume the oil was leaking into the exhaust or intake. The one that worried me filled up though. When I took out the one spark plug there was a bunch of corrosion stuff came out when I was spraying in the liquid wrench.

There is a guy up here that has offered me $600 for it the way it is but I think it is worth more. I know it is worth A LOT more if it was running but I can get a 1986 115hp evinrude for $600, I dont really want to part with the inline 6 but dont want to keep it if it will take to much to get going.

Thanks for the help, please let me know if there is anyhting else I'm missing... or if i should just take the $600 and move on. I am going to try and get out tomorrow or Friday to see if I can free it up... I will post results as soon as I know.

If it is not moving with the impact wrench and all the oil etc you have poured in there, you should check to make sure it is not the lower end that is "frozen" Put the engine in neutral and make sure you can turn the prop shaft. Too bad you are not closer to St. Williams, I would look at it for you. What cyl had all the corrosion in it when you put in the liquid wrench? If it is that bad then it should be pulled down and checked for bearing damage as well as damage to the cyl wall. If the rings were frozen the impact wrench may have broken a ring as well. If so you may get away with new rings and a hone job.

I checked the bottom end right after I found the powerhead was siezed (thought if the bottom end was siezed as well then the motor wasn't worth even looking at) and it works fine. The piston with all the stuff in it was the second from the bottom. I'm not sure I am really capable of tearing the motor down myself. I thought I could but am having my doubts after reading some forums. I am leaning towards just selling it and buying the Evinrude. I am still going to try and get it unstuck but in case I can't... is $600 to low for this motor or is that around what its worth?

Thanks again for the info/advice... I wish it was better news but when all that corrosion came out of the cylinder... I figured it may be a gonner... my brother reminded me earlier tonight that the top end was not properly winterized because I started it four summers ago to make sure it still ran. I never fogged it again after. I'm sure if I would have refogged it I wouldnt be having this trouble... these mercs are usuallybullet proof power houses! I was passing newer 125hp omc models on the same make of boat!

If the water and rust came out of number 5 there is a very good chance you have a water jacket leak on the exhaust deflector. It sounds like a power head rebuild in which case 600 is a fair price for both parties. The purchaser will likely spend another 600 in parts.

OK, not what I wanted to really hear but it was what I was thinking. I'll try and turn it over tonight or tomorrow evening.

thanks again

You would have better luck removing the motor from the boat and laying on a foor with the plug holees straight up, so your penetrating fluids will penetrate the entire piston. the way it is now your only penetrating less than half the surface area.
Make sense?

Marvel Mystery Oil or PB Blaster is a far better penetratig oil Than liquid wrench and motor oil.
