Mariner 50hp 1990

Hi One and all,

I have a 50hp 1990 mariner and am having trouble. I have fitted out boat with switch panel, new nav lights, sounder, radio,cabin led's. I had to change the wiring config behind dash as the already existing wiring was older then myself. in doing this i was trying to rewire tacho to forward control and have some how managed to short out controls or motor. i have done continuity test's on the following components, Kill switch (ok), ignition (replaced with new last night), neutral switch (ok), i have tested all relays and fuses on the powerhead, for some reason i am getting nothing when i turn the ignition on. The power head is receiving 12.2volts no worries at all. i have completed continuity test on all ignition components on powerhead also. if anyone has any ideas suggestions please let me know. i am at the stage of bypassing the tilt/trim to raise motor for transport and taking out to auto electrician.

There is one wire, usually red that feeds power to the controls up front. There is a fuse on this wire. Check it to see if it is blown. At the controls the red wire should give you 12 volts across it and the black. If you don't have power on the red at the controls then that is the wire you need to trace out. Sometimes the old barrel fuses don't make good connection. I would replace it with a blade fuse myself.

On the motor the starter solenoid should have the red wire with the fuse Bubba talks about. It is inside of a larger black rubber connection that pulls apart. It is not making a good connection or it is bad. It should be a 20 amp fuse and it supply's most all the power to the control and gauges along with other accessories. If the amperage draw is to great the fuse will blow and damage is not done to the wiring or other accessories. If the fuse keeps blowing, then you should run another fused wire and split some of the load to it and lower the amp. draw on the main wire. JMO
