Hey there folks, I have a 40hp Mariner. Says its built in Japan - so I'm assuming it's really a Yamaha. Here's the info 6E9, serial #150261, outboard 40EO, S. I think that means its a 1987 motor.

I just found out the lower unit is shot and will be looking for a replacement. Does anyone know if I can replace this with a Yamaha 40hp lower unit from the same year? or does this need to be a Mariner-specific lower unit? Any suggestions on finding a good quality used lower unit?

Thanks

nope, a yamaha lower unit will NOT fit, try ebay or google it, for a good lower unit for your motor .....

Thanks. I figured it wouldn't - seems like they are just slightly differently shaped when it comes to the seam design. I'll have to keep my eyes open.

Thanks
