Disconnect the shifter cable at the engine.

Push the Linkage all the way to the back of the engine. See if REV engages.

Has anyone done some work to the Gearcase...may not have aligned the shift shaft properly.

Check to see if the P/S bearing carrier is in place and not pushed back. There should be roughly 1/16 in of play on the shaft...if there is more then the brg carrier has backed out and must be replaced or tightend.

TMD

hi diconected the remote cables and if i hold the lever back as far as it will go it will work ok, but if i just levae it in reverse it grinds and screams, when pused and help it onlly moves about another 4 mm but this seems enough to engage reverse

A one-lever remote is supposed to idle in neutral when the lever is in the very middle position (often vertical, held in place with a 'click'). When moving either forward or backward it should push/pull the gear cable first, then add throttle.
Both directions should allow gears to engage completely before adding throttle and this is managed by cable/linkage adjustment (supposing nothing mechanical is wrong).

I'd check all these adjustments first. If no improvement I'd check if the remote box works OK.

The gear pin that goes into the lower unit once jumped of on my 40hp, but it was easily fixed with tightening the nut. But if the nut is not corectly adjusted on the rotary taper tap you might experience problems like yours.

Its possible that the shifter cam and pin are worn in the gearcase...both are crucial for reverse. IF they are worn you will not have the correct travel to totally get into gear.

Did you also check to see that the Brg carrier did not back out?

Remove the Prop and look inside...there should be a large plastic or metal ring (NUT) See if you can turn it clockwise. If this is the problem...it will move the reverse gear closer to the clutch.

TMD
