Just got a new boat with a mariner 30. Its an old outboard guessing 70/80s on a flethcer 14. Worked great and got the boat up to about 20knots fully loaded with 4 adukts which I thought was pretty impressive.
Anyway got it out of the water to do a frrsh water flush and noticed a few thingson the outboard I want sure what they did so wonder if you guys could explain.

First there is a flat head screw on the shaft that has "wash" written next to it. Im guessing either a flush valve or a drain plug? If it is the first why would you use it instesd of normal muffs?

And secondly on thr left of the outboard on the front there is a little screw rubber stoppernthat covers 2 spade conectors. Followed the wires all the way around and they seem to lead to aroundnthe pull start befire disaperingg deeper into thr engine. What is it for? An electric start? Kill switch? 12v output? Reslly couldnt find anything about it.

Sorry for all the typos... Bloody tablet

Thanks
Lewis

Re: Mariner 30hp info needed please :)

I can answer the "wash" issue. It is to flush the lower unit. Takes a special fitting that threads into the hole and takes a hose on the other end. Based on my experience with my '82 30 HP the water will never get to the cylinder head - so don't use it with the motor running.

Don't know about the rubber stopper. I'll take a look at mine tomorrow.

Ah thanks, makes sense
Ok so it doesnt do anything running the muffs with the motor running doesnt?

Do you have one on yours?

I have one, but I either use muffs or run in a barrel. When I tried using the wash plug, even with the motor running, the water just ran out the intake ports.

Seems pretty pointless then... Will just stick to the muffs

Green... It's just 2 spade connectors runs up and around the engine and going inside up the top by the pull start cord part....
Had a guy look at it who operates the dry stack my boats at and he didn't have a clue.. Hadn't seen one before...

Manual or electric start? Remote control?

Looking at my service manual (for an '82 30 HP), the only paired green wires that would go into the engine area would be going to the lighting coil. Maybe that's an output from the lighting coil? You could run the engine and check voltage between each one and ground?

All manual, only thing the remote does is throttle and clutch.

That's sounding like the likely option. Gonna have to grab a volt meter and give it a test

Does the manual give you an idea about ampage? Just wondering if it would charge up the battery.....

Don't suppose that's a digital manual? I could do with one....

Thanks

Sorry, not digital. Says the lighting coil puts out 12V/80W. I know from experience that it won't charge up the battery - just provide a little extra juice to compensate for load from lights/instruments/etc.

Going by the volt meter on my dash, when running at 3000+ rpm it puts out about 18 volts (but not many amps).

Magneto or CD ignition? PM me and I can sent you a scan of the appropriate page that contains the lighting coil circuit.

Ah no worries then, think I will have to get a copy of the manual, can't be bad to have

What prop you use? Does it recommend anything in the manual? One on there's a bit nackered and want to replace it with the best you get for it

If engine is like bottom pic.

-Lower flushing port must be used with special adapter, must tape both lower water intakes. if not water will exit from there and poor water pressure will be achieved. Once done, engine must be flushed with engine on so thermo opens and powerhead is fully flushed.

-2 spare cables are for connecting a tacho. 3 spare cables are for baterry charger, must buy a rectifier kit that comes a s a spare part.

Happy Boating

By my manual, the std. prop. furnished w/engine is: 9 7/8" diameter, 11 1/4" pitch, 3-blade aluminum. Good for boats 14-16' long, gross wt. 1000-1500 lbs. and speed range 19-27 mph.

Looks like that would fit your setup - but there are eight additional alternatives shown for differing setups.

It is very similar but don't think its exact... Yeah worked out the flush thing, think just gonna stick with muffs, I don't see the advantage of the wash hole....

Its 2 cables to and proper rubber port on the front of the outboard. Does a tacho not run off a lightning coil though? It works by an AC current do they not? More switching- higher RPM?

Ah I see.. Will have to see what is already on mine at the moment... Looking to get it set up perfect but guess I need a RPM guage to do that properly... Stainless Steel not recommended then?

Stainless Steel not recommended then?

Manual shows 2 steel props (all listed are 3 blade):

9" diameter, 12" pitch for 13-16 footers w/gross wt. 500-1000 lbs., speeds 21-32 mph
10" diameter, 9" pitch for 15-18 footers w/gross wt. 900-1500 lbs., speeds 14-23 mph
