ok, what about 642L 3981?

Hey Michael, does your timing move with the throttle, or is it fixed? I have been tring for a while to get an answer to this, and keep comming up with blank answers.

Lark2004 - any 0s in front of the 3981? How many please?
I've found a couple sources telling me the gap should be .6mm. The Champion site says 1mm but I think that's an error.

Re: Mariner 3.5hp what year

lark2004,
The information regarding the timing I sourced out of the local Library Mariner Manual.
As quoted direct from it :
Mariner 3.5
" The breaker points are mounted on a fixed base. Ignition timing on this model is non-adjustable. Correctly adjusted breaker points will produce the specified timing. If the point gap is too large, timing will be delayed; a gap that is too small will advance timing"

Also plug is NGK B7HS gap 0.019 to 0.024 in.
Point Gap 0.012 to 0.018 in.

Regards
Michael

Re: Mariner 3.5hp what year

Ok, on a much closer inspection of the ID plate (Microscope!) I found that the last number has been put over the rivet hole, hence the odd sounding number.
So my model number is actually 642L 39811. any help with year would help.

Re: Mariner 3.5hp what year

Ah, that does it!
642-37631 to 642-40390: 1975 3.5hp
I think that makes it a Manual Start Longshaft.

There was an odd hiccup in the s/n range in '77 that the first number you posted could have been part of, but I would have expected leading 0s if that was the case.
