Mariner 20hp 1986

I have a 1986 20hp Mariner and I was looking for some answers about the Control linkage cable. I had ran it this morning and it was fine and then I go to show it to a buyer and he was messing with the tiller handle and all the sudden I here a pop and now the control cable linkage will not move but only part of it will I do not know if its just out of line or did something actually break please help me out thanks.
