G'day all,

My mate has a Mariner 75hp, around 1995 model & it won't start when the engine is cold. It takes ages of kicking it over to get it going & once it is warm it starts first go.

He has not had the boat & motor long, but the engine to look at is almost brand new with very little use.

Any ideas anyone???

Howdy, SK.

The most common cause of cold start problems is incorrect starting procedure.

Be sure that the primer bulb is pumped up hard.

If you have a primer system, push the key in for about 5 sec before you attempt to start.

If you have a choke system, hold the key in while turning the engine over until it starts, release the choke and pop it as needed to keep the engine running as it warms.

If you suspect that the enrichment system is not working, spray some fuel mix into the carb(s) as you turn it over. (Don't use starter fluid. It has no lubricant in it and is very bad for 2 stroke engines).

Good luck. :)

G'day Guys,

Tried what you said JB, still no go.
It doesn't even sound like it wants to start, just keeps turning over.
To save the hassel, my mate is taking it back to the dealer for them to rectify as it is under a 3 month warranty. :(

Will let you know the out come. :)

Took the boat back to the boat shop today & JB you were 100% correct in saying it was a starting proceedure.

However neither the book nor any info on the web could give a description on how to start the motor. The manual stated pretty much the same info as JB described, however the dealer knew otherwise.

Turn key half a turn, then push key in & out 6 times, then push key in as you turn the motor over... BRRRROOOOMMMMMM!!!! Starts first go.
Bloody thing :p
