mariner 1988 60 hp 3 cylinder 2 stroke

i have to jump it . very hard to start when it does it runs very uneven and high revs when turning it over sometimes i get a backfire and a puff of smoke . my compression is good fuel ok spark is their but don't know how strong don't have a tester

Make sure that all the wires are on the correct positions of the switchbox from the trigger wires and stator all the way to the coils and plugs. Also check the fuel and oil supply system for air leaks, and correct operation. JMO
