Mariner 1982 gearshift shaft

Hi

I am trying to remove my gearcase on my mariner 40hp 1982 seial no 6e9l 405360 I have the 6 bolts undone around the leg and it drops down about 1 inch thats as far as it will go, it appears the gearshift shaft is the problem where do I disconnect it from.

You should find the elongated nut towards the bottom of the leg where the gearshift is joined.Loosen the nut towards the top section and the shaft should split apart.Took me a while to figure this out.....
