I WENT OUT AND BOUGHT SOME PENNZOIL MARINE 80W-90 LUBE WITH THE API GL-5 PERFORMANCE LABLE

SITTING ON MY SHELF I HAVE SOME VALVOLINE 85W-140 OIL THAT I USE IN MY SPORTSTER, AND I REALLY LIKE THIS STUFF:D

THE VALVOLINE OIL IS ALSO RATED API GL-5 ALONG WITH ANOTHER 6 OTHER GRADES...

SO COULD I USE THE VALVOLINE OIL IF I RUN OUT OF THE PENNZOIL OIL??

JUST CURIOUS :p

Yes, if your particular system calls for 85W-140 weight oil.

Re: Marine vs. Automotive gear lube

The GL5 rating is for pressure and anti scuffing.......

I would not put in any weight that was not called for and marine gear oil has more corrosion protection

Re: Marine vs. Automotive gear lube

lower unit oil has additives to deal with water intrusion that regular oil doesn't so it isn't the weight that is important.

If you get a seal leak and are using regular oil you will find out shortly why it isn't a good idea adn a new lower is quite alot more than a quart of oil.
