Re: Marine vs Auto Gas

Do you guys usually put a higher octane fuel in your Boats? For some reason I always thought that the marine fuel was of a higher octane.

Sean

In some states marine gas (i.e. sold at marinas) doesn't include a road use/maintenance tax (since the vehicle obviously doesn't use public roads). But that savings is usually well offset by the 20-80 cents extra "convienience" charge the marina tacks on.

In a few states, you can use regular gas station gas and then get the road use tax refunded and/or diverted to public waterway type uses. Its a pain in the *** tho.

Pete,

its not a few states that offer the refund, its quite a few states. The paperwork is simple as well. I live in West Virginia but we keep our boat in North Carolina during the summer and fall, I keep all of my North Carolina gas receipts and get the refund every year. Its usually in the $300~$400 range for us each year. To get it you need to fill our a very simple one page form and send it in with the receipts and a 'adding machine tape', for which I subsitute a very small spread sheet I keep.

I think its worth the bookkeeping, which consists of a baggie I keep in the glove compartment of the truck into which the gas receipts.

Thom

Yep Charlie I got gas at Seymour's in Northport today, and I saw the signs about Valvtect in the gas. Should have something extra in there for $2.85 a gallon! Reminds me of the old days and leaded gas which protected valve seats.

Re: Marine vs Auto Gas

eeboater, I have seen several marinas which do not carry regular gasoline. They usually carry either "plus" or premium. I think they only have one gasoline storage tank and have to make a choice on what to carry. Therefore, I suspect that most of their customers would use the higher octane fuel.

Up until this year I have always used regular gasoline that I obtain from a auto service station. This year I have switched to "plus" to stop the ping of my mercruiser. I cannot say if the quality of the regular fuel has declined. It may be based upon the reset of the ignition timing I needed to do after my ignition module failed.
