Hey, i'm a newbie and would like to know the difference between a starter and a marine starter. My Merc 350 Chev needs a new one!

Re: marine starter

It is shielded, to prevent sparks from flying out from the brushes.

Re: marine starter

Yup, what Coors said & let me say this:
Don't be tempted to use an auto starter....
Yup, they are cheaper, but will not provide spark protection from fuel vapors that can collect in your bilge........
Not only would you risk explosion & fire, but you could get a ticket for not being CG compliant.....
Your insurance would not cover it either....
Do not risk it!;):)

Re: marine starter

Hey thanks, I knew there had to be a good reason. Also, being a stock car driver I have a couple extra starters available, o'well. Has anyone bought a starter off Ebay or is there a good online retailer I should look into. Being from ND we don't have much for local parts.

Re: marine starter

I had an automotive electrician tell me there is no difference but I didnt believe him, I just went to my local napa store and they have them or can get them, not priced that bad either. unless it was from a marine ebay store or in a sealed box labeled "marine" I would just order new or get at napa

Check these out YmeHP. I use one of these for my 5 ltr ford. I got it from him. They are great starters, they scream like a little banshee!

Re: marine starter

I call BS, I have taken them apart and marine starters and alternators are different. They are sealed, anything with brushes makes sparks and sparks kill people when coupled with gasoline fumes. PLEASE don't do it, sure you might get away with it forever if there are never gas fumes but you are risking your life.
