i recently bought an 18' 1978 omega tri hull fish\ski boat with a 130 volvopenta inboard motor. im not used to inboard motors nor have i every really used them, frankly i prefer outboard. i was just hoping some of yall out there could give me some pointers about inboard boat motors/outdrives and differences between the two motors.

The major difference in using them is that you must ventilate the I/O prior to starting it up. Run the blower when you first board the boat for a few miunutes. Give the "blown" air a sniff. If you smell gas, find out why and do not start the motor until the smell is gone.

On the carbed I/Os push in the throttle only button and pump the throttle once or twice to set the choke. Advance the throttle (throttle only button pushed) a bit past the neutral and crank the motor. When it starts adjust the throttle to allow it to warm up to operating temps. Now set the throttle to neutral and you can engage the gears.

The I/O may have better low end power that the O/B, will usually get better gas mileage, but cost more to maintain.

there are a lot of differences, the i/o requires more to winterize it, the outdrives need to be removed atleast every 2 years, to check and realign the gimbal bearing, bellows, etc. that's an older set up, so not sure what else needs to be done.

i totally disagree on the cost to maintain.
