marine fuel gauges

This is a general question about safety. It appears that 12 volts are applied by the pink wire attached to the rheostat<br />of the sender unit which is imersed in the fuel tank. Why is this not a fire/explosion hazard?

You're question prompted me to go have a look at mine and the area where the rheostat is appears to be vapor proof.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

Hooty,<br />thanks for the reply. My sender is in the fuel<br />tank. so I think it is surley in a vapor environment. What do you think?

If you've ever replaced a fuel tank you'll note that the manufacturer makes a BIG DEAL out of the fact that the tank MUST be grounded. Sure,voltage around gasoline can be very dangerous ,thats why precautions are taken. Ever hear of a boat's fuel tank exploding? I have!

Does anyone have a schematic for the sending circuit. I have tree wires there, on the center post if I touch to ground I read full. If I touch to the other post it reads full. The other post has a black wire I assume is ground, and a white wire that has been cut of below deck where I cannot get to. Where should this go to? Thanks for any help.

Ed Mac,<br /> The sender wire from the gage goes to the middle post and only carries milliamps which won't spark it is just measuring the resistance. There should be no 12 volt source in the fuel compartment. To BK or anyone else Teleflex.com has all the information you need on their site.<br />Good luck.
