marine deep cell vs marine starting battery

Is there any difference between a deep cell and a marine starting battery? I have both but use one to run my trolling motor. Can I use the starting battery if I need to to troll with?

A deep cell/accessory battery is made to be charged and discharged repeatedly for running trolling motors, electronics, etc. A starting battery is made pretty much for just starting your motor. If you're gonna troll, better get a designated "deep cell battery" for that purpose and use your starting battery for it's intended purpose....don't want to get stuck out on the lake with a battery too weak to start your motor! The 2 types of batteries are designed differently.

Unless you have a monster high compression engine and boat in really cold weather, a deep cycle makes a perfectly good starting battery. (and yes, there are a couple people using deep cycle's to start cold engines, but you CAN get yourself into trouble with that, it just won't spin over fast enough)

And to answer your question, yes you can use a starting battery to run your trolling motor, but it wont last long and it will eventually damage it.

Deeply discharge a starting battery 3 times or so and you will have cost yourself a new battery.

Just an idea, my old stingray had a "combo" battery from walmart... it was a marine deep cycle/starting battery. But i bought a new deep cycle for my glastron that i use a starting battery... works just fine. But i wouldn't do a starting battery if you plan on trolling off it.

I have run combo deep cycle/starting batteries for years--works for me.
