Manual Tilt

I have a 74 evinrude 135 that has manual tilt on it. There is a trailering stop that folds down and part of the outboard latches to it when it is down. It looks as if there used to be a cable or something that was used to release the latch (some goes for when it is in the down position) but has broken off. Every time i want to raise or lower the motor i have to lift it all the way up (and secure it so it stays up) and reach into the water to lift or lower the trailering stop. Its a bit of a hassle so I rigged it to be a little easier but i would like to repair it with the correct parts. Only problem is i have no idea what the parts are called or where to look. Anyone able to point me in the direction?

The latch is the red arrow, trailer stop is blue

Man, thats a heavy engine to have to tilt by hand.

Maybe look around on fleebay and find a tilt and trim unit for cheep.

if i was to get a tilt/trim unit for it, are the model specific? Im not sure on what to look for...

In the first place, the trailering lock is for just that--TRAILERING. It is not for holding the motor up while you are boating.

You should have a programmed tilt lock similar to this one (different motor pictured). You swing the lever up, then tilt the motor and it automatically latches to hold it up. Swing the lever down, give the motor a tug to unlatch it, and let it go back down and latch down. And before you ask, yes it will automatically unlatch if you jump a log.

I'm pretty certain your motor has gas-charged shocks to make it fairly easy to manually tilt. It isn't like you are hauling a hipponaucerous out of the water.

If you do get a tilt trim go with a CMC unit, you just bolt it on and go, with a factory TT you have to find the right year and one that works then dissasemble the engine mount to install it adn they are probably about the same price.

I have run mine for probably 6-7 years wuith no problems at all, they are a little salty but man is it nice to push a button and be done.

That picture is part that I am missing, and lifting it is like lifting a hippo and it's 2 best friends

The missing parts are all shown in the parts list. I can't see if your shocks are in there or not. They could have lost their charge, if they are.

The factory power trim for that motor was sort of a Rube Goldberg affair that bolted to the outside, not between the brackets like newer ones. There also was a power tilt (no trim) kit.

I do have the shocks, but i think that migh be part of the problem of why its so heavy. It looks as if the handle to raise or lower the trailer stop was sheared right off. more than likely the shocks stopped working good, putting too much weight on the release lever, causing it to break. I started adding up prices for the parts i would need and i'm easily up above 300 bucks. for a little more i probably could buy a hydraulic tilt...
