I have a 14' jon boat with an 18 hp Merc and was wondering what would happen if the motor hit something? When I was little my father used to have the motor so it would swing up if it hit something. Is this ok? Pro's and con's?

Re: Manual tilt question

Unless you have it locked down, any outboard will try to tilt up and ride over something if you hit it unless you have the little reverse lock latched.

Most tiller steer or non hyd. tilt engines have a catch on them so the engine won't climb up or tilt when you back up. Just make sure its not latched when you are in FWD.

If the engine can't tilt up when it needs to,,,,, it can get real exciting sometimes.
