Manual starter winter problem

I have a problem with the manual starter on 9.8HP Mercury 110 - when the temp is below freezing point, the starter won't rewind the rope. Can I use WD-40 on the sheave shaft or some special grease should be used?

Also, any advise on winter cold start procedure? In summer the engine would start after a few pulls, but when the temp goes down it becomes tricky. Thanks.

You need to remove the starter take the spring out clean it of old grease, lube with white grease or at lest a light lube reinstall it back on the engine and it will work fine, older grease become sticky after year and is causing your problem, WD40 and light oil is a temporary fix at best

Thanks, I will give it a try, you right it must be the spring problem b/c the rope pulls out alright.
