manual start 9.5 evinrude

on my 9.5 1964 evinrude ther appears to be water coming from the manual start recoil any ideas.

There's no water in the starter recoil machanism. The water must be splashing or squirting from somewhere else. Suggest you take motor cover off and observe while motor is running.

The most likely source of the leak is the gasket just underneath the top part of the pull-start which mounts to the engine block (actually, the exhaust cover). The hole the gasket seals goes directly into the water jacket.<br />To remove the starter, fully extend the rope and jam the starter pinion (up against the flywheel works). Then disengage the rope from the spool and carefully let the spring wind down. Then remove the two bolts from the top of the starter, and remove it from the engine. You should now see the gasket location just beside the aft-most bolt.<br /><br />Installation is the reverse of disassembly. ;) <br /><br />Hope this helps!
