I have a Merc 650 1975 3cyl that I'm making sure the synchronization is setup properly. When doing the primary pickup syncronizing timing the manual says to remove fuel line and run engine till it shutsdown, then remove throttle cable, then loosen the locknut on the adjustment screw between the spark advance and the throttle advance arm. Move the adjustment screw in or out till the throttle actuator cam just makes contact with the throttle lever. This cannot be correct as the only thing that affects the throttle actuator cam is the throttle advance arm. The adjustment here makes absolutely no difference to the throttle actuator cam. It however does move the distributor cap back and forth which is advancing or retardign the spark. <br />So question here is, do i set the throttle arm so that the throttle actuator cam just touches the throttle lever then use my timing light to advance the spark at idle 3-5 degreees? If my understanding is correct I have to get this adjustment first before I can do the max advance adjustment because the maximum advance adjustment depends on the idle advance to be correct.
