Manual Bypass for Power Trim Question

I have a 1973 Merc 850 w/ Power Trim that I just reinstalled in my boat. After filling and bleeding the trim system, it seems to working the way it was when before I removed it. Because of my winter storage situation, I will be needing to raise and lower the outboard on a regular basis and do not want to keep the battery in the boat. So I decided to put the system in manual mode by turning the reverse lock control knob all the way clockwise so that I could raise and lower it manually throughout the winter. I was able to lift it to the full up position and engage the tilt lock with no problems. However, when I manually lowered the outboard, it stopped with about 2 inches of the ram shafts still showing (which left the outboard about 10-12 inches out from the vertical position. I pushed on it but it will not lower any more. I figured that the outboard should be able to be fully raised and lowered manually in the event of a power trim failure while on the water. Does anyone know what is going on?

Re: Manual Bypass for Power Trim Question

I think you are worrying unnecessarily. The manual system is for emergency use. It is imperfect.

As long as the power trim works OK. you are fine.
