Hello everyone,
I have a question about a Mantis Garden Tiller, model 7222M, with a Zama carb C1U. Anyway, this is a customers and it is having a really hard time starting. When I received it, I decided to clean out the carb and actaully cleaned it out two times in a row. Anyway, it took me a while to crank it up and after adjusting the low and high speed adjustment needles it actaully ran Great!! so I took it up to t he graden to till up the grass/weeds that are growing around the vegetable plants. Anyway, after it ran for about 5 to 10 minutes and I came back off full throttle i would not idle anymore and would not crank back up for me. So that is why I cleaned the carb a second time and the same thing again, hard to crank but once cranked ran Great for the first 5 to 10 minutes then died when comming back down to idle speed. So what I have done is replaced the fuel lines but this was before the two carb cleanings so the fuel lines are good to go. Now, tonight I bought a Zama carb rebuild kit and it will not be here until sometime the middle of next week. The exhaust is soaking in carb cleaner to remove carbon deposits. When I removed the exhaust it had some fuel sitting inside of it and the piston had some fuel on it also when I went to pull the pull rope and saw some gas comming out the exhaust port when the piston was moving up and down. So my question is do you think the carb rebuild kit will fix my issue and will replacing the spark plug with a new one help also? I also checked the manifold bolts and there tight and I also checked the two head bolts and there tight. Should I replace the carb to intake gasket. The old one looks good but maybe I should replace it as well. Thoughts....

Have you done a compression test on it? Any thing less than 100psi will cause a hard starting/low power 2-cycle.Have you tried running with the gas cap loose?Could be a plugged up vent in the cap. Also pull the muffler and look at the piston/cylinder wall for scoring if the compression test shows low.

Yeap, I really believe something is going on inside the carburetor on the Mantis Tiller. Anyway, today after work I went to clean up the exhaust/muffler assembly for it and after cleaning the muffler up I went to install it and I noticed a pool of fuel laying in the rectangular slot where the exhaust/muffler goes and where you can see the side of the piston from the rectangular box. So I wiped the rectangular slot dry with a blue shop towel but the fuel slowly oozed back into the lower rectangular exhaust slot. So do you think the inlet needle is to blame or is the check valve inside the carb bad and I need a new carb? I have already, last night, ordered a Zama carb, C1U, rebuild kit for it and it should be here no later than next Wednesday. I hope and pray this carb rebuild kit fixes my carb issue.

Dolluper,
I cleaned out the small screen really well and soaked in carb cleaner for two days and cleaned all the carbon off with a metal bristle brush and you can see threw it really good now. Is that what your talking about?

Simple terms the exhaust system ....spark arrest means the exhaust doesn't shoot out sparks to cause fires loggers are always checked they haven't dumped the spark arrestors off their chain saws......back to the point your straving for fuel ????or your spark is too weak ...shows at idle only
