Installing new manifolds and risers on raw water cooled volvo penta 280A. What should (if any) you put on the bolts so they will come out sometime down the road and what torque should they be set to. Also, is there anything you should put on the new gaskets that will help them seal better? Thank you in advance!

Re: manifolds and risers

I was advised on another board that a "thin" skim coat of Ultra Black won't hurt. But I have also read posts here from Don that some gaskets do not require sealant and extra sealant may be detrimental.

If you have the OEM graphite coated gaskets, they do not get sealer. If you have aftermarket manifolds, risers, and gaskets, check with the manufacturer.

and never use silicone between the riser and the manifold. no matter how tempting. what are the part numbers your replacing them with? the newer style volvo stuff uses a steel shim gasket that uses no sealer as well.if they are paper a coating of perfect seal works well if they have a shiney slippery silver feel a clean oil free surface with no sealer is the ticket. for anti-seize I use a nickel based one and the proper torque and perfect seal on the riser bolts.

Rodbolt, what is the reason for not using silicone on the manifold to riser gaskets? I unfortuanately have done that!

kwool... you know how some guys are... if some is good, more is better. Too much will squeeze through and block the water passages.

A well known/respected mechanic on another site had recommended the use of RTV...sparingly.

Just curious, not wanting to start up something or offend. Is this a preferrence that some mech's have or is it application specific??

From one Keith to another. That was the reason I was hoping as I used it sparingly as well. The purpose was to fill any impurities or uneven mating surfaces between the gasket and the manifold or riser. It was the high temp rtv that was used, I was just curious if there have been any detrimental effects of using this in conjuction with the gaskets. Basically just using it in place of a gasket sealing compound.

Re: manifolds and risers

The manifolds and risers are made by Osco. Part# 5805-MK & 56879-MK. The gaskets are green in color but I'm not sure what they are made of. Directions say not to use any gasket sealer on the new gaskets. It also says not to use any anti-sieze on the new studs because it may cause them to back out. They recommend red thread locking compound. Will this allow for dis-assembly down the road? Just wanted some expert opinion on this before I install them. Sometimes directions are misleading. Thank you again!
