Manifold Question

After my engine sit for a year and a half I decided to part it out. I removed the end cap near the riser and noticed the inside was covered with black stuff, maybe soot. Is this a sure sign the manifold is bad (exhaust getting into the water passage) or is there some other explanation for this black residue?<br />Thanks,<br />James<br />'85 Mercruiser 120

"Is this a sure sign the manifold is bad (exhaust getting into the water passage) or is there some other explanation for this black residue?"<br /> Could be a lot of things, like a rubber impeller burned up and blew through the motor or there was some nasty water ran through it before it was put away. Lots of reasons that could happen. To make sure I would do a pressure test to be sure.

Just out of curiosity, if a manifold did go bad, would that show up on a pressure test?

Try "pressure testing manifolds" in SEARCH. This has come up several times in the last 9 months.

A lot of good iformation regarding pressure testing, thanks, however I didn't see anything regarding testing an uninstalled manifold. Perhaps I just overlooked it. Did you have a specific thread in mind regarding this?<br />Thanks,<br />James

all you can do is block off the water exit were the elbow connects and hook up water to the inlet i <br />would not go over 15 pounds of pressure<br /><br />the water and exaust dont mix until they leave the elbow<br /><br />tommays
