I have an old style Mando 55 amp alternator with the V40 (mercruiser pn# 42785) external regulator on my 1986 Mercruiser 140. The excitor wires have become brittle and fell off while changing the belt. I would like to replace the whole alternator to the newer style Mando 55 amp (mercruiser #98555) that has the internal regulator. I see in the pics on Basic Power Indutries that it looks like a direct swap, in that it has the 2 excitor wire leads and the mounting looks identical. Anyone have any advice on this swap OR recommendations on a better choice?

Re: Mando alternator - replace old style w/ new

Basic Power has the Mondo 3 wire 55 amp for $129 (stock #MES3144), and the Delco style 3 wire for $119.95 (stock #MES3186) and that's with free shipping. All these have internal regulators, and I would really prefer the Delco style as diodes, etc are very easy to get at any NAPA or such. My concern is are they a direct replacement as to the mounts. OR should I just install a Delco 1 wire unit......???

Just install the delco 1 wire unit. You can get it locally and install this kit to make it marine and save a few bucks.

web page

Thanks for the advice. I am going to go with the Delco 1 wire and order a screen kit Monday. I wasn't aware they sold marine conversion kits for them. Thanks again!
