Yes jg, I too hope someone pays for this one.
Had a similar thing happen here last week that involved a van wreck.
The passenger was ejected and was found dead, but they could not find the driver so they thought he had got out and went for help.

13 hours later the wrecker driver finds his body in the back of the van under some carpet.

Re: Man declared dead!!!!!

It seems the system is broke in Raleigh NC, only paramedic can pronounce, and only on reporting the finding and telemetry to a supervising doctor. if injuries are so severe and paramedic are not on scene than A medical examiner is called to pronounce death.
For the lack of a Para medic the EMT will continue resuscitation until pronouncement, exhaustion, incapacity to continue, or physical condition of patient so extreme to deem such to be futile, (decap), extensive avulsion.
The emts dropped the ball, and the examiner clearly is up for malpractice.
But I wasn't there, and the last couple of times I dealt with a death at the scene I would not envy those who had that decision to make in the field. It’s noisy, confusing. Hectic maybe dark and dangerous. And maybe be one person and two pts to choose who u can save.

Reminds me of the old man who wanted to be buried in his trusty 4x4 truck. When asked why, he replied, "ain't never see the hole that she couldn't get out of!"

Well, this ain't the only time its happened, and people do make mistakes...i know one of my teachers, who was an ident specialist for the police force was called to a scene where not only the officer, but the ems and the coroner pronounce and my teach went to collect some evidence and stuff, and with bullet wounds and stab wounds, the guy just sat straight up and walked to the ambulance when nobody was lookin...i ain't kiddin you and its just too damn crazy to be made up....who knows man...for lack of a better term, and as i've been instructed by my friends as school to diversify my language use...Thats....Whack?....i think thats right...oh well....someone correct me if i'm wrong...

Re: Man declared dead!!!!!

I find it odd that in NC only Paramedics can pronounce death as that is not the case most places. In fact Paramedics are not permitted to pronounce. Either way, a cardiac monitor should have been placed on this person before leaving him and that would have told the tale. The EMS crew could have been triaging multiple patients at the scene and in that scenario, it would be approriate to leave this person who was showing no signs of life even without an EKG. But, when all the other patients were taken care of, they should have come back to properly care for this guy.

Even though there is no excuse for this, I can see how it happened. The first EMS crew arrives, sees this guy is apparently dead and goes on to the next viable patient. (That is the appropriate thing to do.) The next EMS crew arrives and asks for a report from the first crew who tells them "That one's dead". (When they should have said "Check that one".) He then ends up in a body bag because the 2nd crew took the 1st's word for it. That happens ALOT! in medicine with all manner of consequences. This time it caught up with them.

This is speculation of course, I don't know what happened here for sure.
