We are getting ready to purchase a new boat within the next couple of months. I have gotten a lot of price quotes from dealers but have not sat down to, "do the deal". Am I going to be able to haggle with the dealer on the final price? How much play can I expect? We are looking in the neighborhood of $15-$20 thousand.

Thanks

Re: Making the deal

I have heard estimates that new boats can be marked up as much as 30%. Also heard that if you can get 15% to 18% off a popular, current model year boat, you did well. The average Joe/Jane can forget about finding "invoice" prices. Dealer margins are higher than if you were buying a new car.

I bought a new boat in 2004. If I recall correctly, MSRP was $25,228. My out the door price (included freight and prep) was $20,995 (price reflects $1200 manufacturer rebate).

This book can shed some light on the subject.

Good Luck.

Edit: IMHO, a good reputable dealer is a must, worth paying a few extra $$$.
