Hi all, I am new to the site.....be kind. I have a Suzuki 115 hp 4 Stroke on my pontoon boat (21' Cast-a-way by Permeir). The engine has about 40 hrs on it and it seems to be gaining oil (about 1/2" in 8 hrs). The shop says this is standard during break-in, I am just a little worried about it. Any ideas?

I guess we have to assume that there is some fuel getting into the oil. If the dealer is aware of what is happening and is not concerned I would take his lead on this. When is the first service?

Chances are the mod will move this.

Re: Making Oil in my Suzuki Motor

The first service is in the owners manual and you are probably over that at this point. Excess fuel in the oil is not good. Change it immediately. 1/2 inch over the full mark means there is a lot of fuel contamination. Then chew out the mechanic and ask him if he routinely operates his car or truck with fuel in the oil. Fuel is not a lubricant. Whenever you operate the boat at low speed for long periods 4-strokes do tend to make oil. Run wide open periodically to burn off that excess oil. The engine may also have the wrong prop which can contribute to making oil. Make several runs at wide open throttle with an average load and note the RPM. If the RPM is under the manufacturers recommended RPM a prop change is required.

Thanks, I serviced the engine at 20 hrs and it seemed to gain after that. I am watching it closely. The prop is letting the rpms run up to 6000 rpm at WOT. Is there anyone out there that has had similar issues with a Suzuki?

I have a Suzy on my pontoon and it does NOT make oil nor has it from brand new. It is propped correctly and gets a good amount of slow operation but trips back to the dock are at WOT when possible.

Re: Making Oil in my Suzuki Motor

hi, I have see this on a DF90 before has the same setup as your engine.

one way that the fuel can get into the oil is from the Fuel Vapor separator if the float is stuck open.
there is a small Evaporation hose( black) on the top of the fuel vapor separator that is connected to the top of the cylinder head cover.

If you start the engine and fuel comes out of this hose you will need to get the fuel vapor separator cleaned.

Re: Making Oil in my Suzuki Motor

I've got a 115 Yahama 4 stroke with the same problem.. 36 hours on the engine. I took it in to the dealer and they checked for blow-by, fuel injectors, thermostat, mechanical fuel pump, etc., etc., to no avail. They changed the oil and filter and released the boat to me and I took it out and ran for another 8 hours at the lake over a 3 day period and checked oil level periodically... it had risen again and smelled of fuel.

Called dealer and took the boat back to them and they dropped the boat into their water tank and ran it for several hours and the mechanical fuel pump diaphragm failed so they are going to replace the pump. The technician said the fuel pump would work fine for a while and sometimes it would fail, so at least that makes me feel better that they hopefully have found the culprit.

I plan on keeping a close eye on this issue!!

Good luck...

Two questions I would have: 1, has the mtr been properly been broken in [ piston rings seated and ect] 2, what temperature is it running at ??

As Eagle180 posted about the fuel pump get it checked.

My 140 makes oil and changing the fuel pump helped slow it down.

How cold of water do you run in?

I run in some pretty cold water. The lakes I fish are in the mountains (4500' + ) and are snowed in during the winter.

Re: Making Oil in my Suzuki Motor

I have a df140 that I cannot get to stop making oil. I figured out it is the evap hose blowing gas directly into the crankcase. I have changed the needle valve and seat and also readjusted the float. Still not working right.

Re: Making Oil in my Suzuki Motor

The Motor has 40 hrs on it now and I run in water that is pretty cold 55-62 most of the time. I don't think the motor is putting out as much power as it should. I think checking the fuel pump is a good idea. I will have the techs check that ASAP. Thanks everyone for the help.
