Took the boat out saturday after it was sitting for about 3 weeks. Mind you it was running perfectly 3 weeks ago. Its a 2004 Chaparral 180ssi 3.0L Volvo with a SX drive. When I turn at idol or in gear and driving, it will make a roaring sound. Its almost like when your power steering fluid is low on your car. Then if I turn the wheel lets say at the center point the noise will go away. But it didn't effect any part of the performance of the boat.

HELP!!!!!

Unfortunately, I just learned the hard way, but it will either be your gimbal bearings or water in the bellows. You can trim the engine all the way up and briefly inspect the bellows (rubber boots) on the transom side of the outdrive. Check for cracks or holes.

I've got the same exact thing. I had a cracked u-joint bellow, and a rusted gimbal bearing. Replaced the gimbal, and U-joints looked fine visually but we are leaning towards that. They are getting replaced next week..

Not to jump on someone else's thread, but just out of curiosity, you changed your gimbal bearing and still have the same issue? I just found out with all the help of everybody on this site that the problem was mostly bellows and gimbal related, so I bought all necessary pieces to change them. I also have rusted u-joints, and have replacements, just trying to decide if that is something I wanna do, or take it somewhere to have done.

Yep, as the others have stated, check the bellows and gimble bearing,,, U-joints. Get it fixed before it does more damage.

just trying to decide if that is something I wanna do, or take it somewhere to have done.

It's not too hard to do if you are mechanically inclined and have a nice set of tools, but can be a PITA if you don't have the specialized tools for the job. First time I did mine it took a Saturday start to finish,,, with lots of colorful words thrown in

As to my mechanical inclination, I guess I'm average? Anyways, removing the outdrive (which seemed soldered on) caused some tourrett's syndrome to come out of me. Also, I HAD a nice set of tools, but man, I can't believe how far those things fly when they don't wanna cooperate. The lawn guys "found" a couple sockets for me.

Mine did the same thing a while back (2 months) sounded fine, went home parked it, removed the exhaust bellows, then next time out I noticed the noise during turns. I pulled my drive off, inspected everything, nice and smooth, zero water-zero corrosion, gimble bearing was smooth and full of fresh grease. I lubed my u joints and put it all back together. Next time out it had the same noise. I think what I'M hearing is thedifferent sound its making now that it has no exhaust bellows on it. No vibration or anything else funny. It just makes me wonder.

well it was the gimbal bearing alright. It was stuck to the shaft when i turned it it was rough and growning. I had to cut it off with a die grinder. putting it all back together today. I'll be in the water tomorrow!!!

You are replacing the bellows also I hope. Gimbal brg's rarely go bad without water getting to them. The water mostly gets there through a bellows somehow.

Re: Making loud noise when turning HELP!!!

PROBLEM taking care of FIXED!!!! Well it all went back together very good. Replaced gimbal bearing, seal, all o-rings,bellows and greased it all up and its 100% running PERFECT again. I also changed the engine and the lower unit oil. Started it up no noises I was so happy. Took it to the boat ramp and burned 10 gallons of fuel running the boat everywhere no problems at all I love that i can work on my own boat. Thanks for all the help.
