Re: Making Leaders
First off - if you ask 10 true fishermen this question, you will get 12 different answers.

Also, there is no such thing as a sure thing.

Having said that, now to business.

My wife makes up trout/flounder/seabass rigs for some of the local tackle shops, and she uses 50 lb. leader material, and it comes in 4 ft lengths. She leaves it 4 ft. long for trout/flounder bottom hooks, but cuts it in half for the top hook, or for the sea bass rigs.

Most shops prefer red or green beads, but I personally use glow beads.

Most shops prefer a 2/0 kahle or bass style hook (both gold and silver), but I use a 5/0 circle hook for trout/flounder, and a 1/0 pacific bass hook for sea bass.

Most shops prefer a silver or gold blade, but I use a white glow blade.

HOWEVER, I have with me a ziplock bag full of parts (beads/hooks/ blades/etc.), and I make up something different if they are not hitting what I have on the rod.

I sometimes go to flourocarbon leaders if they are picky. It does seem to make a difference.

And from having the advantage to try it all, I learned a long time ago that the most important things in DE/NJ waters are the right kind/freshness of the bait, how clean you keep your hands, how quiet you motor your boat to your fishing area, and where you are fishing.

Always, the type of lures are a last choice of importance. The other items are a necessity, lures are optional.

I normally fish two rods, one with lures/bait and one with bare hooks/bait.

And, normally, the "bare hook and bait" rod will catch as many as the other, sometimes more.

Just some thoughts ........
