I am trying to make an onboard cooler and was wondering where I can get one of those plastic inserts used on boats?

Re: Making an onboard cooler

Most boats come with on board coolers with a drain. They are basically a plastic square insert and usually a seat will act as a lid. You can put drinks and ice in them and lift up the seat BAAM a drink. I have googled plastic cooler inserts and nothing has come up.

Have you tried contacting the boat manufacture and see if they have a insert? Off the top of my head the only boat i know of that uses inserts is the Nitro Bass Boats but I'm sure others do also. You could call them and see what sizes they have and if they will sell you one. Also another idea that you might try is a battery box with a lid. You could line it with insulation and its big enough to hold 8 to 10 beverages with ice. It would also be portable and easily removed from wherever you put it. Just a thought.

Texas Maid is no longer in business. From what I have seen these are not real coolers but they should work. I will drill a hole for a drain and can wrap insulation around them. This TM has a head that pumps directly into the lake. Not exactly legal so I cannot use it so I want to make a cooler out of it and level the top so I can make a bigger bed to sleep on.

why not buy a cooler the size you want and install a drain plug in it .....seems to me it would be easier to start out with a COOLER.....than to rig something up out of bits and pieces that need to be insulated...

Good idea. I think either way it is going to be hard to get something to fit exactly.

Re: Making an onboard cooler

making a great working cooler is easy...
back in the day we built an old bread truck into a track truck for pulling the race car...
the front half was for traveling, and the back half was a rolling garage...
we basically built rectangular boxes out of plywood for bench seating up front...lol, this was before seat belt laws, we lined the boxes with 2" foam board and used spray adhesive to keep it in place, if you go with carefully cut 45's on all the corners you can get a very tight and perfect fit....
then we took the plastic shower board stuff you get at HD and cut to fit, spray adhesive, and sealed the seams with 5200 sealant....

drilled a hole in the bottom, through floor of van also) to fit a standard sink drain, installed the drain, sealed with 5200, and plumbed a drain to drain the water where the AC condensate would normally drain....

we used a regular ol' rubber sink drain plug to plug the drain, we drilled a couple small holes thrue the plug to let the water trickle down and out....

the top is simply cut to fit, we used 3/4" doubled up and cut foam out to fit into the bottom snugly.....we camoflouged to look like a simple bench seat with a cushion on top.....

it would hold ice for days, and would fit enough beer to last a whole weekend at the race track.......

lol, no one who ever looked or sat in the van was ever the wiser to what they were sitting on until we needed another round !.......empties were crushed and put right back in the cooler so it was a completely self contained system..

i reckon the point is/was.......you can build a very good working cooler, to any size you need it, and make it look like it belongs there......
